Position Summary
Marshall Geoscience is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Staff Geologist or Project Geologist to join our team on a full-time basis. This position supports a broad range of geotechnical and environmental projects, with responsibilities spanning CAD drafting, field construction inspection, laboratory testing, and technical report preparation. The ideal candidate is organized, technically capable, and comfortable working in both office and field environments across Southern California.
Key Responsibilities
CAD Drafting & Technical Support
- Prepare geotechnical and geological plan sheets, cross-sections, boring logs, and site figures using AutoCAD or equivalent drafting software.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, including formatting, figure assembly, and document production.
- Maintain organized project files, CAD templates, and drawing libraries in accordance with firm standards.
- Coordinate with project engineers and geologists to ensure drafting deliverables meet regulatory and client requirements.
Field Construction Inspection
- Perform geotechnical construction inspections including grading, earthwork, and soil compaction operations.
- Conduct field density testing using nuclear gauge and sand cone methods in accordance with applicable ASTM standards.
- Observe and document site conditions, subsurface exposures, and earthwork activities during grading operations.
- Prepare daily field inspection reports and maintain accurate field records.
- Coordinate with contractors, project engineers, and regulatory agency representatives on-site.
- Assist with subsurface exploration programs including observation of drilling operations, soil sampling, and field logging.
Laboratory & Environmental Support
- Assist with in-house laboratory testing including moisture-density relationships, Atterberg limits, gradation analysis, and other standard geotechnical tests.
- Support environmental field activities including soil and groundwater sampling, methane testing, and site reconnaissance.
- Assist in the preparation of Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment reports under the direction of a licensed professional.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Geology, Geological Engineering, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD or equivalent CAD drafting software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear, professional technical correspondence and field documentation.
- Valid California driver's license and reliable transportation; ability to travel to project sites throughout Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties.
- Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and on active construction sites.
Preferred
- California Geologist-in-Training (GIT) registration or Professional Geologist (PG) license.
- Prior experience in geotechnical or environmental consulting, construction inspection, or a related field.
- Familiarity with LADBS, LA County, or other Southern California regulatory agency requirements and procedures.
- Experience with nuclear density gauge operation and associated NRC/Agreement State training.
- Working knowledge of applicable standards including ASTM, CBC, and California Geological Survey (CGS) guidelines.
- Experience with field logging of soil borings, test pits, or similar subsurface exploration activities.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) for report and data management purposes.
