Position Overview

Diaz·Yourman & Associates (DYA) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Entry-Level Geotechnical Staff Engineer to join our team. This is a terrific opportunity to work on interesting and challenging transportation (i.e., highways, airports, streets, bridges, rail and transit), port and harbor, building, and water infrastructure projects, and to gain experience while working with a dynamic team and contributing to the company’s growth and success. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, enjoys both field and office work, and is interested in building a career in geotechnical engineering.

 Key responsibilities

  • Assist with the planning and execution of field investigations, including marking exploration locations for USA notification, soil borings, tests pits, cone penetration tests, site reconnaissance, and percolation/infiltration tests.
  • Collect, log, and analyze soil and rock samples.
  • Field work may comprise over 50% of duties and may include nights and weekends. Field vehicle provided.
  • Assist in assigning laboratory tests on soil and rock samples collected.
  • Review laboratory test results.
  • Perform slope stability, settlement, liquefaction potential, and foundation analysis under supervision.
  • Assist in preparing geotechnical reports, including data summaries, calculations, and recommendations under supervision.
  • Coordinate with project managers, contractors, and clients.
  • Perform construction observation and testing (e.g., compaction, grading, foundation, excavation).
  • Review project plans and specifications.
  • Assist in proposal preparation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology, or related field. (Master’s degree preferred or willingness to obtain.)
  • EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification or ability to obtain within 6 – 12 months.
  • Basic understanding of soil mechanics and foundation engineering principles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both in the field and office environment.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
